Massive scale-up for
climate-significance

About us

Our mission: Inform and empower.

The DVNE is a multi-stakeholder, industry-led platform to facilitate collaboration and the development of policies conducive to the formation and scale-up of an equitable, world-class carbon dioxide removal industry in Germany to realise net-zero by 2045 and net-negative thereafter.

Why is this important

By uniting leading CDR experts, we are paving the way to Germany’s net zero emissions by 2045 and net negativity beyond, making a significant contribution to global climate goals.

A pivotal challenge – for Germany and the world

Carbon dioxide removal is crucial to stay within the global warming targets, but industrial leading countries are struggling to integrate CDR in their climate strategies. Germany, as the largest economy in the EU and 4th largest globally, needs to lead the way.

Building Germany’s path to and beyond net zero

The DVNE brings together carbon dioxide removal (CDR) leaders who are committed to spearheading the transformation towards a sustainable future, paving the way for Germany to attain net-zero emissions by 2045 and net-negative thereafter

Large-scale, world-class and equitable

A key goal is to facilitate the collaboration and the development of policies conducive to the formation of a large-scale, equitable, world-class CDR industry in Germany. We engage with policymakers on national and EU level, as well as with international associations, to ensure ideal frameworks for a strong CDR policy in Germany.

CDR is unavoidable to reach net

The urgency to address climate change has never been more apparent. Climate models emphasise that despite advances in clean energy solutions and ambitious emission reduction measures, no realistic path reaches the net zero targets without additionally sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere: so called carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

It is important to note that accelerated and deep emission reductions must remain the majority of efforts, especially the build-out of vast renewable energies, which are vital for CDR. Nonetheless, if we do not invest significant resources in CDR today, we will not be able to scale CDR volumes (over the coming decades) to climate-meaningful levels (gigatonnes per year) and remain well below

A portfolio of CDR methods are

CDR requires a portfolio approach due to the multifaceted challenges and urgencies posed by climate change. Relying on a single solution is insufficient to address global CO2 emissions. Various CDR methods such as soil carbon afforestation/reforestation, biochar carbon removal (BCR), bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), direct air capture (DAC), enhanced weathering (EW), and ocean fertilization, each have their own set of advantages and CDR.

Massive scale-up for climate-significance

All CDR methods together, will need to reach a capacity of at least 10 Gt by 2050 in order to be climate relevant. For novel CDR methods this means a scale-up factor of 1,300 versus today (State of CDR, 2023). To make this ambitious growth journey happen, appropriate markets and policies need to be developed
